Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do you see adults in your practice?

Yes.  Even though I have sub-specialties in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry/Psychosomatic Medicine, I am also board certified in General Adult Psychiatry and see adults of all ages in my practice.

2)
What is Osteopathic Medicine?

Doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s) practice a "whole person" approach to health care.  Instead of just treating specific symptoms, osteopathic physicians concentrate on treating you as a whole. Osteopathic physicians understand how all the body's systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. They focus special attention on the musculo-skeletal system, which reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems.  Osteopathic physicians also use their ears to listen to you and your health concerns. D.O.s help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness but also help prevent it.  Millions of Americans prefer this concerned and compassionate care and have made D.O.s their physicians for life.

3) Are Osteopathic Physicians (D.O.s) trained differently than Allopathic Physicians (M.D.s)?

Yes. D.O.s and M.D.s are alike in many ways:
         - Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges typically have four-year undergraduate degrees with an emphasis on scientific courses.
         - Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of basic medical education.
         - After medical school, both D.O.s and M.D.s obtain graduate medical education through such programs as internships and residencies. This training typically lasts three to six years and prepares D.O.s and M.D.s to practice a specialty.  Dr. Schwartz has completed a total of six years of post graduate medical education, allowing him triple board specialization.
         - Both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine-such as pediatrics, family practice, psychiatry, surgery or obstetrics.
         - D.O.s and M.D.s must pass comparable examinations to obtain state licenses.
         - D.O.s and M.D.s both practice in all fully accredited and licensed health care facilities.
         - Together, D.O.s and M.D.s enhance the state of health care available in America.

4) What is the sub-specialty of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry/Psychosomatic Medicine?

Psychosomatic Medicine is a board certified sub-specialty of psychiatry where psychiatrists are dedicated to the treatment of individuals with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions.  Thus, Dr. Schwartz has received specialized training in working with medically ill and/or medically compromised children, adolescents, and adults who also suffer from a comorbid mental health condition.  As a result, Dr. Schwartz is experienced in the complex psychopharmacologic treatment of patients with medical illness who need mental health treatment.  Since most patients with medical ailments receive medication for their condition, it is important to have both knowledge and experience in the prescribing and treatment of patients with such comorbid conditions.

5) What does confidentiality mean and how does this apply to me and my family?

Confidentiality referes to a set of rules and regulations set forth and regulated by the federal government under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).  HIPAA controls the accessibility and dissemination of information regarding your health records.  Thus, any information in Dr. Schwartz's office is kept confidential and not released without written consent by you.  Since Dr. Schwartz does not work with insurance companies, at no time will any information be released directly to your insurance company regarding your mental health care.

6) Will my health insurance plan cover the cost of treatment?

Dr. Schwartz will provide invoice statements with all the necessary information needed for you to submit to your insurance company.  This will allow for partial reimbursement.  Since many fee-for-service providers will reimburse between 50%-100% of charges after deductibles, a portion of your care will be covered.  This allows for much greater flexibility and time devoted to your care without the pressure or dictation of treatment by mental health carriers.  Payment is requested at the completion of each session and may be in the form of cash, check, debit card, or credit card.
