Child & Adolescent Care

Our children deserve the best in life and little is more important than their education and health care.  Whether it's routine care to maintain optimum health, or specialized treatment for severe medical illnesses, deciding who provides this care for your child remains the same.  It should be nothing but the best.  Mental health is of course no exception.  Education, training, and clinical experience are important factors to consider when choosing a physician.  In psychiatry however, much more must be considered as well.  Due to the extremely personal and private nature of problems presenting to a psychiatrist, trust is of the utmost importance.  However, choosing a Child & Adolescent psychiatrist that incorporates these special traits can be daunting.  Dr. Schwartz prides himself in providing the best in assessment and treatment with the time and compassion one would expect from their physician.

Using a biopsychosocial approach, Dr. Schwartz incorporates biological, psychological, and social elements influencing you and your child.  Each child & adolescent is seen as part of a familial and social network rather than solely as an individual without influence of or by his or her surroundings.

As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Schwartz believes in treating an individual as whole, incorporating mind and body together as one.  Multiple factors play a role in the pathology of disease in all of us.  By assessing all of these factors, Dr. Schwartz will always  formulate a treatment plan that incorporates all facets of psychotherapy, including cognitive and behavioral approaches to change, utilizing medications only after exhausting all other psychotherapeutic modalities.  As a parent himself, Dr. Schwartz fully understands the anxiety of having a child on medication.  However, medications can be very helpful for many conditions.  Dr. Schwartz reserves the use of medication for those who are significantly impaired by their condition.  Should medications be indicated and initiated, Dr. Schwartz takes special care in monitoring for side effects and keeping patients and their families informed about all of the risks and benefits associated with their medications.
